THREE DARK CROWNS
DETAILS
I recreated Kendare Blakes’ Three Dark Crowns book cover using photography and physical photo manipulations. The novel follows three sister’s journey throughout a magical and dark world, and my adaptation conveys the mystery and elegance of it. I photographed three rings that conveyed the personalities of each sister, printed, manipulated the photos for an eerie feel, and composed the design in Photoshop. The script typeface for the title, Kristi, conveys a gentle and mystical quality while the context communicates something much more sinister. The white space also helps create a contradicting message to the viewer much like the story and its suspenseful nature.
CHALLENGE
Create a compelling and interesting book cover that creates interest but also conveys the essence of the story.
PROCESS
The first thing I did was purchase and photograph the three rings. I then printed the images and physically manipulated them by tearing the paper apart. Next I scanned the three images and edited them in Photoshop. I found a font that matched the essence of the story. Then, I created the design layout of the dust cover. And lastly, I printed it at Columbia College's Digital Print Center.
