DETAILS

Inspired by monologues from Sam Levinston’s Assassination Nation and using imagery from September 2019’s Vogue, I developed this personal project as commentary on feminine beauty displayed through media compared to reality. I manipulated the images with a scanning bed to express “image” for a woman and how convoluted that concept can be. I used two contrasting typefaces, Gill Sans and Playfair Display, to help express the expectations of a woman (a refined serif) versus reality (a blunt sans-serif). The mixture of these elements creates a jarring but interesting piece, much like the inspiration behind it.

CHALLENGE

The biggest challenge with this personal project was taking images with a preestablished narrative and creating one that is completely different from it. It was also difficult to create powerful typography layouts with imagery that was as dynamic as what I created.
