THE FLOWERS THAT YOU GAVE ME

OVERVIEW

This personal project uses a collection of my poetry, photography, and found images to comment on insecurities. I wrote poetry that expressed insecurities, paired them with models, and placed my floral photography on them in Photoshop to convey that, like everyone else, they have hidden insecurities.

DETAILS

This personal project uses a collection of my poetry, photography, and found images to comment on insecurities. I wrote poetry that expressed insecurities and then paired them with models, because they are people who society typically idolizes. I then placed floral photography onto the models in Photoshop to convey that, like everyone else, they have hidden insecurities. The typeface used is Bembo, to create a sense of refinement and beauty like the imagery presented. Using InDesign and a 3 x 4 grid I left a considerable amount of white space to help draw attention to the text and make the reader really focus on the words and the meaning of the spreads

CHALLENGE

The biggest challenge with this project was creating a very specific and personal narrative that was cohesive in text, font, imagery, as well as experimenting with design.

PROCESS

I walked throughout Garfield Park Conservatory and captured pictures of bright and interesting flowers. I then collected and edited images of models and actors to use for the project. I edited the flower images and arranged them on the models. And I began to construct poems that told my story, but also related to the images created. I placed the images and text on the page and created the layout design of the book. Finally I printed the book through Blurb.
